Risso's radical shift: from marni to uniqlo, redefining fast retailing's aesthetic
Francesco Risso’s career trajectory has taken a stunning turn, moving from the rarefied world of Marni to the mass-market dominance of Uniqlo’s GU brand. It’s a move that signals a dramatic shift in the Fashion landscape, and one that Risso himself acknowledges with a bracing honesty.
A collision of creativity and scale
Initially, the collaboration with Fast Retailing – a company known for its surgical precision and efficiency – appeared jarring. Risso vividly recalls the immediate impact: “The clothes were immediately in the streets, in multiple cities at the same time, all over the world.” This wasn’t the slow, deliberate drip of a high-Fashion release; it was an instant, global saturation.

The ‘weird’ factor: risso’s unique vision
Despite Fast Retailing’s reputation, Risso insists he brings a fundamentally different approach. “I’m a bit weird in the recipe,” he admits. “Creativity has defined my being so much.” This divergence is precisely the point, according to Risso – a beautiful oxymoron that’s shaping GU’s new identity. He describes it as a deliberate contrast with Tadashi Yanai’s meticulously engineered organization.

Six characters, infinite possibilities
To navigate this new terrain, Risso has concocted a novel system: a cinematic universe built around six distinct ‘characters’. These archetypes—the Existentialist, Grungella, Woody Allen, Agassi, Frog, and Kitten—each embody a particular aesthetic and inform the design process. “We don’t conform to one thing,” Risso explains. “We’ve become very, I would say, multiple.” This approach allows for a dynamic, layered collection where pieces can be mixed and matched, encouraging consumers to express their individuality.
Accessibility and the price of luxury
Risso is keenly aware of the current shift in the Fashion industry. “Right now, Fashion prices are going higher. Luxury — who can really define this word? I don’t think that the word stands for so much on its own anymore.” He sees a significant opportunity in providing accessible, high-quality clothing at affordable prices, a stark contrast to the increasingly rarefied world of luxury brands.
Numbers speak louder than words
The impact of this strategy is already evident. GU’s online bestsellers – Bermuda shorts for $29.90, cotton tees for $9.90, and a tiered skirt for $39.40 – demonstrate the brand's appeal to a broad consumer base. Fast Retailing’s recent fiscal results, reporting $18.9 billion in sales for the first nine months of fiscal 2026, with GU accounting for $1.6 billion – a 3.7% increase year-on-year – further validates this model.
A constant state of adaptation
Despite his success, Risso describes the experience as feeling “like he’s back in school,” as he constantly adapts to the demands of a global retail giant. “It’s a tough and tight rhythm,” he concedes. However, he’s embracing the challenge, recognizing that the ultimate product – the clothes themselves – will speak for him. He’s focused on introducing GU to a global audience, aiming to establish it as a distinct brand within the Uniqlo ecosystem, pushing beyond the simple practicality that defines its sister brand.
The future is fluid
Risso’s approach is less about imposing a singular vision and more about fostering a conversation with the consumer. He plans to continue listening, observing, and refining GU’s aesthetic based on real-world feedback. “It’s a sculpture that we are molding together,” he states, confident that GU will carve out its own unique space in the world, one carefully curated character at a time.”
